IPhone beats traditional cameras to the top, yet again!

Is an iPhone a smartphone or a camera?

If there were any doubts on what it was, latest data from photo sharing platform Flikr this week should put them to rest with more users resorting to clicking pictures with the iPhone in 2017 than ever making it the largest used technology for photography in the world.

The advent of smartphones dwelt a deathblow to traditional cameras, particularly since 2010. But in 2017 they accounted for 50% of the photos uploaded to Flickr, up from 48% in 2016.
Of these Apple’s iPone has clearly emerged head and shoulders above competition with quality telephony ending up a given on most brands.

Not surprisingly, Apple itself has been promoting the iPhone as a photographic devise among other things with detailed tutorials for users to derive the most from it to shoot pictures.

Even though it was Apple phones that ruled the roost with iPhone models occupying the top eight and 10th spots, it is not that traditional camera devices are disappearing any time soon.  DSLRs accounted for 33% of the pictured uploaded to Flikr in 2017, up from 25% in 2016. But point and shoot devices were down to 12% from 21% in 2016.  The Canon 5D Mark III placed 9th in the Top 10 Devices proving the favourite of the serious photographer though high end iPhones are fast proving to be a challenge.
So the next time you go out looking for a high end camera but think again. Will you be better off buying a high-end phone?
